This is sacred ground on which good and true citizens stand and may rest. The courtyards just beyond the palace are peaceful grounds decorated with fountains flowing with water and these grounds are guarded by nearby soldiers and strong marbel columns. Families of noble birth gather and come to celebrate outside the palace walls.

The rations are poor and the work is strenuous. If boys are caught stealing or displaying weak behavoir, they are violently punished. A spartan youth must learn how to handle the tip of a blade, but they must especially learn to fight the enemy until death. King Leonidas I founded a training school for the boys of Sparta here.

Every year or so a brawl with much bloodshed occurs among these wise citizens and teachers. Yet, for most of the time this is a temple of science, intelligence and peace. A place where one, even a troubled king, could collect himself and his thoughts.

On the southern side of the track stand the cliffs, while on the north side is the gulf. Along the path are a series of three constrictions, or gates, and at the center gate a short wall has been erected, the remains of a previous battle centuries before.

In the center of the square stands a wooden platform, where tall metal cages stand, holding weeping slaves locked up in their small prison.
